Holidazzle 2010

A few weeks ago we took the kids to Minneapolis' Holidazzle Parade. We decided to head over on a Thursday evening because we thought it wouldn't be as crowded and because it was supposed to be the warmest day all month (high around 30 degrees). The kids were so excited to be able to see a parade during the winter AND at night! (I love living in a city that doesn't shut down when it gets cold out!)

Winter Storm 2010

Unless you live under a rock, you probably have heard about the winter storm we got here in Minnesota last weekend. We woke up Saturday morning to find a few inches of snow outside, but it was coming down pretty heavy and every news channel was telling people to stay at home. But do you think we listened? Of course not! (We had tickets that morning to take Wyatt and Sadie, as part of their Christmas gift, to see DIsney on Ice. Since Disney didn't cancel their show, we ventured out as well.)

We took the kids to Mickey's Diner in downtown St. Paul for breakfast

They loved the show and we had a great time.....and then we came outside! There was so much snow and the roads were a mess. It took us quite awhile to get home, but we were so thankful for 4-wheel drive and a heavy car that got us through LOTS of snow! Once we got home, we continued to watch in amazement as the snow just kept coming and coming and coming!

It looked and felt like we were in a winter wonderland!
The next morning we woke up and the snow had finally stopped, but everything was still shut down (our church even cancelled services on both Saturday evening and Sunday morning for the first time ever).

Notice the Adirondack chair under our deck...

The blizzard brought not only snow but also intense winds, resulting in these amazing formations in the snow. So beautiful.....

The downfall of all the snow......when the plows finally come through and bury your driveway!
Matt and I went out on Saturday evening around 9pm and shoveled all 18+ inches off our driveway. It some parts it was closer to 3 ft. from the winds, but it was a lot of snow on a 3-car wide driveway. Yet we had so much fun out there together. It was dark and so quiet and peaceful. The Christmas lights shone throughout our neighborhood as we shoveled and shoveled and shoveled. It was a great workout and we were proud of all the work we had done (no, we are still not getting a snowblower....shoveling is just too much fun!)

After we shoveled on Saturday night, Matt had the brilliant idea of parking our cars in the driveway to prevent huge snow drifts from accumulating on our driveway. And his idea worked great....but you can see how high the snow was from the plows.

Shoveling out was a neighborhood activity that day.....
This picture helps illustrate just how high the snow was.....we really were 'trapped'.

The mounds of snow on either side of our driveway are just massive...taller than us in some points and covering almost the entire trunk of our tree.

I took this picture with my phone on Monday when I went to get our mail.

No worries about having a White Christmas this year!! We are loving all this snow...now if it would just get above 5 degrees and we could actually get out and play in it a bit more!

random things....

Things are so much fun in our household right now with Blake's new ability to walk and constantly learning new things.....BUT it also makes some things very difficult. So I have resorted to using the ERGO (thanks Steph!) for cleaning my floors, bathrooms, folding laundry, etc. But it is a great workout to carry around an almost 28lb. child while doing this stuff.

These are the kids' chores......
We were having a hard time (maybe it was mostly I who was having the hard time) being consistent with chores and giving allowances. So I adopted this idea from a friend of mine and it's been working wonderfully! Each of these tongue depressors has a 'chore' written on it (dust bedroom, clean toilet, vacuum your room, etc) and each morning Wyatt and Sadie each pick two from the large cup and then put them in the small cup when they are done. I have had several people ask me how I keep the cleaning on a schedule....well, I don't. With three little ones, it's nearly impossible. So sometimes the toilet gets cleaned on back-to-back days and sometimes it's a week between cleanings. But the purpose is really to teach the kids how to be a part of a family and help out and also how to do each chore well. I learned to let go of how clean it actually was and focus on what I was trying to teach them. But the kids love it since there is an element of surprise each morning. Once they finish their chores, they get 2 tickets (they love the tickets and I bought them at Walmart on one of those huge rolls of tickets, so they are just like the ones the kids have seen before). They only get their tickets if they don't complain while doing their chores and if they are done to my satisfaction (basically if they tried their best or if they just tried to get it done quickly). They save their tickets and once they get to 10 tickets, they turn them in to me for their allowance. (Their allowance=their age.) They have to be in charge of keeping track of their tickets (since I won't replace lost ones) and then turn them in. It's been really great to also teach them about managing their money, although this concept will obviously grow as they get older. But they have to put 10% aside for church and 10% in their piggy banks for savings (which they say is for college:). So far this is the most effective method we have had yet to date and they are still excited about doing it. I know the excitement will wear off, but the chores are not an option--they have to be done. The only option is whether they will choose to have a good attitude about it and then be rewarded or whether they'll do it begrudgingly. And I'm praying that I can be consistent with this as well!

Some new decor...

I have been reading several interior design blogs lately--in all my spare time :)--and was inspired to get some new christmas decor in our house. (not tough to convince my husband of this as he is the one who LOVES decorating and seasonal decor.) I also took on a few DIY (Do It Yourself) projects that actually turned out to be pretty fun......

I had the idea for this vase but my mother-in-law helped me pull it all together.

This was a fun one.....bought paper mache letters and spray painted them. I would like to add more glitter next year, but with my little tornado around (Blake), I wasn't up for cleaning up the mess that it creates.

And this doesn't really count as decor, but it is a must-have for anyone with a real Christmas Tree. It's a tree-waterer that sits inside the tree and allows you to check the water level as well as water the tree right from here (as opposed to reaching under the tree with a pitcher of water).

My mother-in-law made these a few years ago for the kids as an advent countdown of sorts and the kids love them. This year I hung them on a wire I had hung for pictures (unfortunately the weight of some of the items inside the mittens was a bit heavy, so I'll have to restring it once we are done with Christmas) but the kids love waking up each morning and seeing what is in each mitten.

Love the season! And love how festive the house feels this time of year!

It's that time of year...

Just before Blake's birthday, the kids and I made some Christmas cookies. And they were extra excited this year as my mother-in-law had gotten them each their own aprons (and one for Blake too, once he's big enough to help out). I have such great memories of doing this with my mom when I was younger and I am excited that the kids can now do much of it on their own and that they look forward to it each year now.

The best part? Eating the dough, of course!

It's such a process to make cut-out cookies (making the dough, refridgerate it, roll it and cut out the cookies, bake them, cool, decorate) that we usually have to do it over a day or two. The kids ended up decorating them right before dinner (whose idea was that?).

(Don't mind Sadie's tank-top....she likes to change her clothes at least once a day and this was what she had changed in to before her nap.)

The cookies turned out fabulous and are almost gone. I also made several other kinds of Christmas cookies/candies that are less kid-friendly as far as the baking goes. And for those who know my family and their love of my buckeyes, I made a double batch that is already gone and am in the process of making another batch. I don't know what I'm going to do when I have a 17yr old, 15yr old, and 13 yr old eating them!

1st Birthday Party

We had a party for Blake this past weekend and my in-laws as well as my brother-in-law came to help us celebrate. But since my parents and my sister weren't going to make it for the party, they gave Blake his gift while they were here for Thanksgiving.

Blake only wanted to climb on the presents

A gift for boys/men of all ages!

Now to his real party....of which Wyatt and Sadie were the most excited. They picked out what kind of cake he should have and of course, helped unwrap just about every gift (as well as helping to play with the gifts!)

Opening his gifts from Grammy and Papa

The highlight for him? Getting to help Daddy use the screwdriver. As soon as I pull that thing out of the drawer, he's like white on rice with it....and he doesn't want to let it go either!

Reading one of his new books with Daddy

Sadie enjoying some time with Papa

Finally starting to get the hang of opening gifts...just in time for Christmas

Trying out the "sit-n-spin" with Uncle Ty

I think we have a risk-taker on our hands
He is really into cars lately and loves to make the 'vroom' noises with him mouth...constantly
(hence the constant drool on my floors)

Wyatt and Sadie's pick for the cake...and man, was this easy! only 3 colors!

He wasn't too happy that Wyatt was holding his hand back from the candle

But he didn't hesitate to dig in

Again, using anything as a telephone

Practicing 'How old is Blake?"

I think he's got it down
We had a great birthday for him and are thankful to our families for being a part of it. It is funny how the parties get smaller and smaller as each kid comes along, but I would say its also so much more fun having older siblings to help celebrate. And I WELCOME the smaller parties since I enjoy making their birthdays special but without the hassle (and cost) of a big party. It was great to celebrate his 1st year of life and I am so excited about the next year. He is so much fun right now and walking everywhere! I survived another 1st year of my kids' lives (not my favorite year) and am now entering the 'fun' stage.
