Wyatt's First Day of School

Tuesday, Sept. 6th was Wyatt's first day of school. First grade!! And for us, that means his first year of going to school all day long everyday. He was really excited and if you asked him what he was looking forward to the most, he'd say, "Lunch at school, gym class and recess!" Spoken like such a boy! Matt then asked him if there was anything he was excited to learn at school and he answered, "Math".
The night before school we asked Wyatt if he was excited and he said, "I have been waiting for this day all summer long!", which is actually true. The first day of summer he said to me, "I am bored. When can I go to school again?" Thankfully he really enjoys school.

The big morning finally came and we started the day with the kids' favorite--homemade cinnamon rolls.

I had told Wyatt that on school days, he needed to lay out his clothes the night before and then dress himself. The same is true for Sadie, however, she got an extra day of summer so she got to stay in jammies for awhile (which made her VERY happy!)
(notice that wonderful storm door my hubby put in?)

My sister Mary Jo was with us that morning because she had gone to a concert at the State Fair the night before. It worked perfectly to have her there and I had high (unreasonable) hopes that this would allow us to get a great family picture on the first day of school. But then I was quickly reminded of how some of my family members feel about mornings in general and how hard it is to keep others still.

I wasn't going to give up too easily but when Sadie's complaining about the bright sun didn't stop and Wyatt started to notice the same thing, we just called it quits. Some year.....
(p.s. our house faces north, so the sun was off to the side! Not sure why they were so bothered by it)
This was the best Sadie could do.....and I'll take it!
Wyatt and Gracie
(unfortunately they aren't in the same class this year, but still the same bus!)

The bus stop kiddos
(Emma, the little girl with the white bow in her hair, is in Wyatt's class this year along with his good friend Titus)
One last picture with my boy
Immediately after we took this picture, the bus pulled up. And I didn't anticipate it at all, but Wyatt started crying. I was completely unprepared for it, although it is fitting with his personality. I think he just realized that it was all so real and he was going to get to school and not know his 'routine' yet. But he held Gracie and Lillie's (Grace's older sister) and sat with them on the bus. All the other moms were crying when they saw Wyatt getting sad, but I knew I had to stay strong for him and show him that everything would be just fine. My neighbor had to go up to the school later in the day and she texted me, saying, "Just saw your boy at school with a HUGE smile on his face. Asked how his day was going and he said, 'great'!"
I knew he would be fine once he got to school and realized that the first day is new for everyone and he wasn't the only kid who didn't know how everything was going to work.
He got off the bus that afternoon and ran to Sadie, Blake and I and it was then that I got a bit choked up, realizing that someday I won't have a little boy running to me after school (and that someday I won't be able to pick him up!)
One mom brought fresh-baked cookies for all the kids and another brought popsicles, so we all sat outside for over an hour and heard all the details about the first day. Wyatt looked at me and said, "Mom, you put OREOs in my lunch and a note for me!" When I told him that I knew that, he asked, "When did you get OREOs?" I thought it was so cute and I am looking forward to being able to brighten his day when I can't be there through the lunch that I pack him. I remember so fondly, opening my lunch and feeling the love of my mother whenever she wrote me a note, just knowing that she was thinking about me even when I wasn't with her. So hopefully Wyatt will feel the same thing.
That being said, he really wanted to take hot lunch the next day and I told him he could. Many of the other moms had encouraged me to let him do it at least once the first week just to make sure he knows how to do it with his pin # as they have many extra helpers on hand the first week of school to make sure kids know what they are doing. So on Wednesday, I let him get hot lunch and told him to request the 'healthy option', telling him it was a bagel and cream cheese with fruit. When he got off the bus, I asked how lunch went and he said, "Mom, there wasn't a bagel.....only fruit......and now I am starving!" Some of the other kids at the bus stop were trying to explain to Wyatt where he needed to go to get the bagel (very nice kids, I might add, who are friends of Wyatt's) but I could tell he was getting embarassed. When I looked down at him, he had tears in his eyes but also some green goop (sp?). I said, "Wyatt, it's okay. We can talk about it at home, but do your eyes hurt?"
Before I even finished saying it, I knew he had pink eye. As his head was bowed, I just said, "Honey, I think you have pink eye. Let's go home and take a look at it." Well, apparently that made him even more upset, as I later learned he somehow thought having pink eye was his fault and he had done something to get it.
To make a long story just a bit shorter, we came in and put some drops in his eyes that I had left over from when Sadie had pink eye. He calmed down and I looked on the school lunch schedule and sure enough, Wyatt was correct in getting fruit at school because the healthy choice option for the day was a fruit platter with honey sunflower seeds! Poor guy...I felt horrible! But once I reassured him that his eye would get better and that I was wrong about the lunch thing, he was just fine. He still wanted to try hot lunch again when it was something that he actually wanted, so I told him we would try it again this week. But that will have to wait because this morning he woke up with an ear ache. So after two days in first grade, I had to call him in sick and we went in to the doctor's office to get looked at. Sure enough, ear infection AND pink eye AND Blake also had an ear infection!! Thankfully they are all issues that can be solved relatively quickly and Wyatt is looking forward to being back in school tomorrow.

Loving this stage

Sadie has been loving school lately and continues to provide ample entertainment around our house. I really need to take a video of her 'teaching' her babies. It's what she loves to do most. She will come home from school and even before she has finished telling me all about her day, she will take one or all of her babies in another room and teach them whatever Bible story she learned about at school that day. It is absolutely hilarious to hear her stories and there are so many things she says that I try and remember, but when she has about 10 different quotable quotes within 10 minutes, I just can't keep up. But this girl CANNOT get enough of being told a story or telling stories....she definitely got this gift from her Papa, Matt's Dad. And we just love to sit and listen to all the stories she tells.

This is what Sadie does every morning.....snuggle up with Daddy in his chair. When the kids wake up, Matt is usually just finishing his quiet time in the office and Sadie loves to curl up on his lap and cuddle with him. And he loves it too! (On this day, she had her first dance class of the year and was so excited that she got dressed all by herself before coming downstairs.)
Her babies...I figured I should take a picture of Sadie and all her babies while I can still remember all their names. Someday, I know, I will look back fondly on these days but possibly won't remember all the details.....so from left to right, Sadie-Baby Kate (who has taken up residence in the kids' bathtub, hence the lack of clothing)-Baby Ashley-Baby Doll-Baby Owen-Baby Maddy.
Exhausted!!! I actually took this before school started and had let Sadie go without a nap so that she would be tired enough to get to bed early that night. She was getting so tired that I told her she could watch a movie in the family room for a bit and when I came back in to the room, she was like this!

I am just cherishing this time with Sadie and love this stage in her life. She is thriving in school and loves learning, but she still enjoys being at home with me and playing pretend with her babies! Can I just stop her from growing up right now?

Labor Day Weekend-Part II

My parents left on Sunday and we ended the day with a free concert/picnic at the park across the street from our house. It was for our entire development, so the kids spent the night playing games (3-legged races, gunny sack races, etc) with all their friends. The food was great and was donated by a few local restaurants.
Monday morning we went out for breakfast as a family (I can't remember the last time we did that) and then made a stop at Home Depot. We went in to get a new door handle for our back door and came out with a new storm day for the front door. So Matt spent part of Monday putting that on (you'll see it in the kids' first day of school pics) and I was so thankful!!! It lets in so much light and the top portion has a built-in screen that comes down for these beautiful fall days we are about to have!

While Matt was putting the door on, the kids and I grabbed the mail from the past few days that had been left in the mailbox (I have NO idea who left it in there!!) and they were so excited to get a package!!!! Can you tell?
My mother-in-law sent the kids a package for their first day of school. She made Sadie that cute little purse....
And they each got new pencils, Pop Rocks and M&Ms.
Blake got his own Pop Rocks and M&Ms as well!

We had a cookout with a few of our neighbors and then another neighbor from down the street gave the kids rides around the neighborhood on this!!
Have I mentioned how thankful I am for our neighbors?
This was the scene on the path between our house and our neighbors from about 2pm-6pm. The kids all played and we sat outside eating and talking! What a great way to end our summer!

Labor Day Weekend --Part I

Our original plan for Labor Day weekend was to head up to Stormy Lake for one last time this summer. But as the weekend got closer, I began to feel the pressure of school starting on Tuesday and Matt had some talks he needed to work on for a conference he is speaking at this week. We went back and forth on the pros and cons, being so torn about what to do. When Matt looked at the weather forecast for the weekend on Wednesday night, however, we decided to stay in town. The highs on Saturday and Sunday were only in the low 60s up there, so not much skiing or swimming would probably be taking place. We were bummed out, though, because we were really looking forward to seeing Matt's sisters and his parents. That being said, we had a great and relaxing weekend here at home.
My parents decided to make a last minute trip up here Friday afternoon and we headed to the state fair on Saturday.

My Dad and Wyatt love playing games on the iPad together
In fact, I think my Dad may get more in to it than Wyatt does!
We couldn't have had better weather for the state fair.....high temps in the upper 60s! That's unheard of, but just my style1

Watching the parade

you'll notice a theme in this post....I know I sound like a broken record when I say this girl loves to dance, but once you have spent an entire day with her, I don't know if you can truly appreciate it! This was what she did during the parade whenever she heard any form of music

oh dear!

Of course 'baby' needed a ride on Sadie's shoulders when her feet got tired also!
Bet you didn't know you could dance in the back of a gator, did you?

The kids got to take turns sitting in this tractor that had a video simulator in it so it felt like they were really out in the fields

Sadie's favorite part of the fair was getting to see the little piggies. In the pen next to this one we were able to see 9 piggies that had been born over the previous 6 hours and the mother was still in labor. It truly was amazing!

...oh, and touching them!
Blake even took a turn petting them, although he was a bit more tentative
the mass of humanity

My mom is so great with little kids....she teaches Sunday school at their church to kids ages 18-24 months and she's been doing it for years. It is definitely a gift she has that I'm not sure I inherited. The patience and unending energy she has is amazing!

I also bet you didn't know that the end of a bench was another great place to dance!

and of course, we ate some wonderful fair food.....Blake loved the mini-donuts!

Thank goodness for Pops' piggy back rides or else I'm not sure we would have made it back to our car!

Exhausted!!!

We had gone to the fair the week before as a family since we thought we would be gone Labor Day weekend and I took a few pictures with my phone that I thought I would include here. Sadie got to see (and pet!) a calf that had been born just about an hour earlier. She thought it was so great and I found it rather disgusting, although I didn't share that with her! But the mother was still cleaning the calf off!
This was what Blake looked like the entire time the kids were on rides....just longing to be out there instead of stuck in that stinkin' stroller!
My kids are still asking if they can get these hats, despite the fair being over. I think Matt and I may have to bring some cowboy hats back from Texas when we go at the end of the month.
How cool is this??? It's even spelled correctly!
